The Indian Heart Initiative will focus on the following subset of research needs listed by the American Heart Association, in its statement on ASCVD in South Asians in 2018.
Defining specific cut points for waist circumference and BMI that identify increased risks for cardiometabolic disease among Indians
Identifying Indian–specific optimal glucose cut points for ASCVD risk
Validating/improving ASCVD risk calculators for Indians in the US
Identifying high-risk younger Indian patients with efforts toward developing effective preventive (lifestyle and pharmacotherapy) strategies to reduce ASCVD risk
Understanding why physical activity and fitness levels are lower among Indians
ASCVD indicates atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease; BMI, body mass index; CVD, cardiovascular disease; and HDL-C, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
