The Indian Heart Initiative will focus on the following subset of research needs listed by the American Heart Association, in its statement on ASCVD in South Asians in 2018.

  • Defining specific cut points for waist circumference and BMI that identify increased risks for cardiometabolic disease among Indians

  • Identifying Indian–specific optimal glucose cut points for ASCVD risk

  • Validating/improving ASCVD risk calculators for Indians in the US

  • Identifying high-risk younger Indian patients with efforts toward developing effective preventive (lifestyle and pharmacotherapy) strategies to reduce ASCVD risk

  • Understanding why physical activity and fitness levels are lower among Indians

ASCVD indicates atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease; BMI, body mass index; CVD, cardiovascular disease; and HDL-C, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
